August 6, 2007, Morgan Hill, Calif. – Alien Technology Corporation, an industry leader in Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) products and services, today announced that their products and services have earned designation as Qualified Anti-Terrorism Technologies under the Support Anti-terrorism by Fostering Effective Technologies (SAFETY) Act of 2002 for airports baggage and cargo handling systems. Designation under the SAFETY Act is granted by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and provides legal liability protection to customers and users of Alien Technology baggage and cargo implementations related to an act of terrorism.
Baggage and cargo handling systems utilizing Alien® products and services have been installed at airports around the world in order to help defend the global air transportation system against a wide range of terrorist threats. These implementations provide enhanced security to the handling and transportation of materials, baggage and other cargo.
“Alien was able to obtain the SAFETY Act designation by demonstrating to the DHS that our products and services are effective in helping to combat and prevent terrorist threats,” said Ronny Haraldsvik, Vice President of Marketing, Business Development and Industry Relations of Alien Technology. “Being awarded the SAFETY Act Certification and Designation allows Alien to provide liability protections to our customers. We feel strongly that this designation will lead to more widespread adoption of RFID technologies, and ultimately a safer and more effective means to help combat security threats.”
The SAFETY Act was drafted in response to liability suits that were filed after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The protections enable qualified companies to offer anti-terror services without fearing excessive liability for their customers. Congress – understanding that the fear of lawsuits could keep important anti-terror services and technologies out of the hands of the federal government, port authorities, commercial customers and others – created the system of liability protection offered by the SAFETY Act as a strong incentive for companies to buy and sell effective anti-terror goods and services.
